The Two Nights Solana Beach's New Restaurants Still Go Dark

Walk down South Cedros Avenue on a Tuesday hoping to grab a table at one of the restaurants everyone in town has been talking about, and you'll learn something the grand-opening posts didn't mention: most of them aren't open.

That's not a knock on the food. It's a scheduling reality that anyone who has lived in Solana Beach long enough to remember when this stretch of town was mostly a place you drove through on the way to Del Mar or Leucadia should know before they plan a night out. Six new kitchens have landed here since 2023, and four of them still run on the kind of lean, early-stage staffing schedule that leaves specific nights of the week genuinely thin. Knowing which nights, and which single restaurant covers each one, is the actual local knowledge worth having right now.

Six New Kitchens In Under Three Years

Start with the one that's been open the longest. Rare Society landed at 330 South Cedros Avenue in 2023, the second location for chef and owner Brad Wise's retro steakhouse concept out of Trust Restaurant Group. The room seats 130 with a gold-and-black Rat Pack aesthetic, a wood-fired grill running on American red oak, and a reserved high-roller table known as Table 99. When it opened, Wise was clear about what he wasn't building: "We didn't come up here and put in a behemoth steakhouse." Three years in, it's the elder statesman of the group and the only one of the four with a fully documented weekly schedule that stays open on a Monday.

Rustic Root followed in February 2025, taking the ground floor of the new Sandbox Solana mixed-use building at 343 South Coast Highway 101. It's the second location for a New American comfort-food restaurant that had spent a decade in the Gaslamp Quarter, and by its fourth week the operating partner was already talking about hiring twenty more staff just to keep up with brunch and happy hour demand.

CTZN moved into the same building about six months later, in Suite 110, with a soft opening on August 6, 2025 and a grand opening on September 3. It's a Basque tapas concept from siblings Willy Wu Jye Hwa and Karine Beers, who also run La Clochette Cafe & Bakery, with chef Matthew Crawford leading a pintxo-and-paella menu built around wood-fired seafood and a curated Spanish wine list.

Two blocks over on Cedros, Vále Bodega finally opened at 346 South Cedros Avenue, in the old Homestead Cafe + Market space. This one took far longer than planned. The Leucadia Co, run by Mario Guerra, first announced a March 2024 opening for this smaller sibling to Valentina, its Spanish-Mediterranean bistro in Leucadia, then missed an end-of-2024 target too, with no firm date on the books as late as March 2025, before it finally opened its doors. The wine list is curated by sommeliers Ricardo Zarate Jr. and Todd Henderson.

Round it out with Lana, a coastal-comfort dining room that took over the old California Pizza Kitchen space in the Beachwalk Shopping Center along Coast Highway 101, and Mia's Solana Beach, a Baja-Mediterranean kitchen at 243 North Highway 101 from the team behind Bluewater Grill, serving Peruvian ceviche and whole roasted fish without seed oils in any dish. Neither publishes a detailed weekly schedule the way the other four do, so they sit outside the pattern below, but they're part of why this stretch of town feels different than it did two years ago.

Monday Belongs To One Restaurant. Tuesday Belongs To Another.

Here's the pattern that actually matters if you're planning a week around this new scene, based on the four restaurants with published hours:

Line those up and the gap is obvious. On a Monday, Rare Society is the only one of the four serving dinner. On a Tuesday, CTZN is the only one open, and Rare Society, the Monday option, is closed that night instead. Three of the four newcomers are dark on both nights at once. Wednesday through Sunday, the whole set is open and the corridor works the way the marketing suggests it does. Monday and Tuesday, it doesn't, and treating this like a seven-night restaurant row is the fastest way to end up standing in front of a locked door.

The Backbone That Never Blinked

None of this touches the places that were already here and never changed their hours to chase the new crowd. Claire's on Cedros still opens seven days a week for breakfast and lunch, closing around 2:30 on weekdays and 3:00 on weekends, with the salmon cake Benedict and short rib hash still on the menu. The Belly Up Tavern, running out of the same Quonset huts it's occupied since 1974, still books its own calendar independent of what the restaurants around it are doing, so a dark night for dinner can still be a full house at the Tavern depending on who's on the marquee.

If Monday or Tuesday leaves you without a dinner reservation, the design district itself doesn't close. The stretch of Cedros between Lomas Santa Fe and Via de la Valle holds a run of galleries worth a slow, unhurried walk any evening the restaurants aren't cooperating:

Coffee still runs through Pannikin and Lofty Coffee, and the Sunday farmers market in the design district is its own separate rhythm entirely, worth building a morning around regardless of what's happening at dinner that night.

Why This Particular Stretch Of August Matters

There's a specific reason to think about all of this right now. North Coast Repertory Theatre, at 987 Lomas Santa Fe Drive, is bringing back Eleanor for a two-week return engagement running August 27 through September 6, with tickets at $88. Kandis Chappell, who originated the role here in 2023 before taking it to Laguna Playhouse, the Portland Stage Company in Maine, and the Rubicon Theatre in Ventura, is reprising the part where it started. The San Diego Union-Tribune called the production "a thoughtful, insightful and well-cast look at the former first lady" when it debuted.

North Coast Rep, like most local theaters, doesn't typically run Monday or Tuesday performances. Scapin, the show wrapping its run at the same theater this week, played Wednesday and Thursday evenings, Friday and Saturday evenings, Sunday evenings, and weekend matinees, with no Monday or Tuesday dates on the schedule at all. That means the theater's dark nights and the new restaurant scene's dark nights line up. If you're building an evening around a show and dinner, you were already working within a Wednesday-through-Sunday window before you even thought about which kitchen to book.

Planning Around A Five-Day Scene

None of this means Solana Beach got a lesser version of what the openings promised. It means the neighborhood picked up a genuine five-day dinner scene layered onto a seven-day town, and the two aren't the same thing yet. Wednesday through Sunday, you have real choice between a steakhouse, a Basque tapas bar, a Spanish wine bar, and a New American kitchen, all within a few blocks of each other. Monday, it's Rare Society or nothing new. Tuesday, it's CTZN or nothing new. Either night, Claire's, the galleries, and Belly Up's calendar are still exactly where they've always been.
