Your Oceanside August: Three Anniversaries, One Walkable Weekend

Three numbers to hold in your head this month: 40, 41, and 20. The Top Gun House turns 40 years famous. The Oceanside Longboard Surfing Club Contest hits its 41st edition. The Super Girl Surf Pro celebrates its 20th. All of it lands between August 7 and August 23, and most of it happens inside a mile of the Pier. If you live here, August 2026 is the month the surf-history spine of Oceanside snaps into alignment with the newest food geography in town, and you can experience both in the same afternoon on foot.

Here is how to spend it.

The Weekend Everything Points To

Block off August 7 through 9. The 41st Annual Oceanside Longboard Surfing Club Contest and Beach Festival runs those three days at the Oceanside Pier, with family-friendly competition featuring surfers from Hawaii to Santa Cruz competing in the Coalition of Surfing Clubs, alongside the King and Queen of the Pier Pro/Am Invitational with $5,000 in prize money per division.

The Friday piece is the one to plan around. The 2026 event is timed to coincide with the California Surf Museum's exhibition, Surfing: Hawaiian Royalty's Gift to the World. The Museum will stage a rare in-water demonstration of ancient Hawaiian surfboards on Friday, August 7, offering the public a chance to witness the origins of surfing in motion, and the event is expected to draw some of the biggest names in California surfing, who will paddle out on the historic boards.

If you have lived here long enough to be casual about the Pier, this is the year to bring visiting family. A paddle-out on replica ali'i boards is not something the Pier hosts most Augusts.

Two weeks later, the town resets and does it again. The 20th annual Super Girl Surf Festival arrives August 21–23, bringing the world's largest women's surf competition and music festival back to Oceanside with over 100 top professional female surfers, a free concert stage and a Festival Village packed with wellness, art and community.

Add the Sunset Market on Thursdays downtown and First Friday at Tremont Collective on August 7 and you have more than you can actually get to.

The Top Gun House at 40, with Gelato This Time

The little yellow cottage on North Pacific Street has been Instagram bait for years. This summer it becomes an actual place you eat.

The restored 1888 Victorian cottage nestled on North Pacific Street has drawn fans from around the world since its appearance in the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun. This summer in line with the 40th anniversary of the original film, An's Gelato takes over the space with its new "An's Gate D5" concept, bringing a vintage aviation-inspired vibe, creative flavors and a fresh wave of energy to the space. The airport terminal theme runs deep with seven rotating destination-inspired flavors like Milan pistachio alongside sorbetto, coffee, and affogato.

The walkable pairing that makes this weekend work:

• Watch a Longboard heat from the sand at the Pier
• Cross Pacific Street to An's Gate D5 for a scoop
• Walk two blocks to the California Surf Museum for the Hawaiian royalty exhibition
• Loop back down Mission Avenue for dinner

Most residents have done pieces of that route a hundred times. Doing all four in sequence, this month, is the point.

South O Has Quietly Become the Food Address

If your mental map of Oceanside restaurants still ends at the downtown pier, South Coast Highway is where the last two years happened.

South Oceanside is the stretch of Coast Highway that's quietly become the most talked-about food corridor in North County San Diego. The Freeman Collective, a pair of converted 1950s buildings, houses Tanner's Prime Burgers, Corner Pizza, Artifex Brewing, Little Fox Cups + Cones, HomeState, and the San Diego debut of PopUp Bagels.

Six operators in two mid-century buildings is a density Oceanside did not have in 2023. It works because the tenants are complementary rather than competitive: bagels in the morning, tacos and burgers by day, ice cream and brewery in the evening. You can plan a Saturday around the Collective and never repeat a business.

While you are down there, the seafood scene has its own anchor. Oceanside's food and drink scene is practically unrecognizable from what it was before The Flying Pig and Wrench & Rodent Seabasstropub sparked a decade-in-the-making food revolution. Now, Coast Highway is dotted with coffee roasters like Revolution Roasters, Michelin Bib Gourmands like Dija Mara, chic wine shops like Merenda, and twee eateries like Rose Cafe.

Downtown's Next Wave, and What Is Still Coming

Downtown itself is not standing still while South O gets the attention. A few names to know if you have not eaten out in a couple of months:

Fish Shop. Fish Shop has just opened a new location in downtown Oceanside at 236 S. Coast Highway. The restaurant offers a customizable seafood experience, letting guests choose their fish, such as Alaskan cod, sea bass, red snapper, or mahi-mahi, and enjoy it as a plated dish or stuffed tacos with a variety of sauces and marinades.

Little Fawn. One of the new Oceanside restaurants with a menu that focuses on shareable plates and well-executed entrées. The dishes are beautifully plated and arrive looking just as impressive as they taste. Every dish felt thoughtful, balanced, and memorable. The cocktail program is equally strong.

Valle. Still the ceiling. Refined Baja-style fine dining Mexican cuisine, where Chef Roberto's vision, delicious food, outstanding service, and pier views earned him a Michelin star. If you have out-of-town guests during the Longboard weekend and want to book something once, book here.

Coming later this year. Copper Kings Burgers, a San Diego–based smash burger concept known for its coastal pop-ups and San Marcos flagship, is planning to open a second brick-and-mortar location in Oceanside at 326 N. Horne Street, taking over the former Northern Pine Brewing space. Founded in 2020 by co-owners Jonathan Petr and Dermot Owens, the brand first gained traction in Oceanside through pop-ups at local breweries before expanding across North County. Biergarden's roughly 5,000-square-foot new space will replace The Lab Collaborative and is expected to carry forward its communal beer hall format, focusing on craft beer, casual food, and a full bar, with an opening anticipated later this year.

The Sleeper Picks

The Pier gets crowded on Longboard weekend. If you would rather sidestep the crush, three softer options worth putting on the calendar:

Mission San Luis Rey. The King of Missions is the quiet counterweight to the beachfront calendar. First held at the Mission San Luis Rey in 1997 and a community tradition every year since, the San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians Inter-Tribal Pow Wow returns to the grounds of the historic "King of Missions," honoring the enduring heritage of the Luiseño people. The Pow Wow itself ran in June, but the grounds and Mission remain open through August and make an easy morning if you have already done the Pier twice this summer.

Mellano Farm Stand. North River Road, opening weekend of the month. Watermelon and lavender, a working farm setting, and a completely different pace from Coast Highway.

Sunshine Brooks Theater. Small room at 217 N. Coast Highway with programming ranging from Wayne Riker's blues gathering on August 1 to Candlelight strings tributes later in the month. Twenty minutes from your front door, five minutes from dinner.

Why This Month Matters, If You Already Live Here

Oceanside spent a decade being told what it was going to become. August 2026 is one of the first months where the "becoming" and the "already is" show up on the same block. The Longboard Club is on its 41st contest. The Surf Museum is putting ali'i boards back in the water. The Top Gun House is scooping gelato. PopUp Bagels is opening in a 1950s building nobody paid attention to five years ago. The Michelin star is a decade old idea that finally arrived.

Residents who moved here in 2015 remember when downtown after 8 p.m. was a question mark. Residents who moved here last year probably assume it was always like this. Both are partly right. This is the month to walk it and see for yourself.
